Nathan Dutch Assignment 19
The best piece of advice I got from someone wasn't actually a piece of advice; and I didn't receive it, but rather I discovered it. It was an account by former President Jimmy Carter about his interview with Admiral Rickover from the U.S. Navy for a position aboard a nuclear submarine. The interview went fine until Rickover asked Carter a simple question, "Did you do you best?" Initially Carter responded, "Yes sir," but couldn't keep the truth from spilling out. "No, sir I didn't always do my best." Rickover simply questioned, "Why not?" Just like that, Carter slowly eased out of his seat and walked out. So whenever I do anything, I give a whole-hearted effort, no half-assing. Sometimes it's hard, and my best changes from day to day. Sometimes my best isn't even good enough. But some time down the road when I get asked, "Did you do your best," I want to look the questioner in the eye and say, "Yes sir."
