Andrew Reese: Assignment 3
Sometimes, when looking at history, it seems like there really is no definitive good or evil. A lot of people's actions that seem good have selfish motives and end up hurting people. On the other hand, sometimes things that seem cruel are ultimately the right thing to do. I would put examples here, but I can not think of any that a large portion of people would strongly disagree with. Giving exact definitions to either of these things is quite difficult. If I had to give "good" a precise definition, I would have to say that it is doing something beneficial for the primary reason that exists outside of one's self. I would define evil as causing unnecessary pain for reasons that do not benefit anyone. These definitions are far from absolute, however. There are probably quite a few cases where something fails to fit my definition of good, but I will still consider it so. The same goes for evil, probably more so. I hope that my definitions become more concrete over time.
