These are my three prompts:
-Talk about how awesome One-Punch Man is
-Talk about how awesome Undertale is (the one I will be responding to here)
-Describe your strategy for dealing with stress
I play a lot of video games. A lot of them are twitchy and fast paced, meant as a simple test of speed and skill. But the ones that stick with me, the ones that have shaped who I am today, use everything at their disposal to turn play into something greater. Music, character design, story, dialogue- a truly special game can take these and combine them with the interactive element to make something incredible. Most of the time, this means a cool boss fight with energetic music and an exciting buildup to the fight that concludes with the player killing that boss in the most spectacular way possible. You're left feeling like an invincible god.
But Undertale isn't about killing-at least, not in the way most RPGs are. When you kill a boss in Undertale, you feel sorry for him or for her. Characters talk bout how kind or fun to be around that person was. Clearly, violence does not have a happy ending.
But this wouldn't have even close to the same impact if the game forced you to kill them. Guilt doesn't come easily to those forced into their situation. So instead, the game wants you to spare them. And you will want to, not to see the best ending, but because they deserve it- even the relentless killers, because everyone deserves a chance to become better. Making friends may be an unconventional method of self-defense, but if it works, you have not protected yourself, but both of your lives are all the richer with friends.
